You're right. What annoyed

You're right. What annoyed me was the endless nagging: I only need to be told once, then I'll reboot myself maybe an hour later, or the next time I turn the computer off. Windows insisted on reminding me every five minutes. I realised that my system wasn't updated until I rebooted, but I didn't need to be reminded constantly.

if you dont reboot

it's basic, if you dont reboot, new files updated are not load to the system, so u are not updated, its the same thing that turn of the automatic updates because it dont so anyting if you dont reboot.

about the linux, i worked in it some months ago, i like it, but it's always somethink that i cannot find, its always something that i cannot do on him, and to do it work like i want takes lot of time that i dont want it to take. so im using windows again, it have all that i need, but bugs too <del>.</del>'

Another Solution

I just came across this at secretGeek. http://www.secretgeek.net/restartNagger.asp

It's basically the steps to take to stop it from nagging you every ten minutes to do a reboot after an update.

Not fed up, but not complacent either

Consider that the majority of people who use Windows actually need the computer practically punching them in the head to reboot and apply updates. Now consider that the other percentage of people who actually know what they are doing will have enough wits about them to tell Windows Update to either let them know when updates are available, or simply download new updates and let them decide when to install them. In either case, you get to decide when the updates are applied. Presumably, since you know you'll probably be pestered to reboot, you'll wait until you have that free minute to reboot. (I don't know about your machine, but for the last three laptops I've owned over the past 4 years, the time to boot has been about 23-27 seconds, and then add the shutdown time, which is only another 20 or so seconds.)

So, no not fed up, but not complacent either. I'm fine to reboot every once in a great while since it literally takes less than a minute (again YMMV), but I at least change my settings so that I am the one determining when that minute is.

Yes I bought a Mac 5 months ago :) and I'm not thinking about going "back" to Linux or Windows. But 5 months is not a long time. I'm gonna reply here in about 2 years again about the Mac g

Have you tried a Mac? A lot

Have you tried a Mac? A lot of people swear by them. My wife currently uses a Linux machine at home, but I'm seriously considering getting her a Mac next so I don't have to do any more technical support :)

Nicola: "My laptop isn't working!"

Me: "Here's the number for Apple's helpdesk..."

Don't get me wrong. I like

Don't get me wrong. I like Linux and I don't like Windows, but there were times, using one of both, when I wished I could drop dead instead of struggling with one of the "features" or "missing features".
I like Linux more because it fits my needs better then windows, but I don't consider any of them as real good.

Oh, I don't know, I haven't found too many missing features. Granted there are a few things which would be nice if they worked out of the box (like being able to play mp3s and Windows codecs), and a few hardware incompatibilities (e.g. the built-in wireless on my laptop doesn't work), and I can't play any games. But apart from that I'd rather have Linux than Windows any day. I hardly ever have to reboot for no reason whatsoever, or just to get something to work that's stopped working.

Hi Cody. I do want automatic updates; I just don't want the machine to restart when they're applied. Or I just want one prompt then to be left alone.

If it's my machine, the Automatic Updates is disabled and I check once every month or two.

If it's someone else's computer,

cmd > net stop wuauserv

makes the bad juju go away.

Don't you Windows users get fed up?

I've switched my Windows machine on today, as my sister sent me a CD which won't open on my Linux machine, but inexplicably will on Windows. I'm currently copying a load of music tracks from it to my laptop. However, every 5 minutes or so, Windows pops up a dialogue box which says it has updated itself and needs to restart, with two buttons: Restart now and Restart later. It also has a countdown progress bar, which gives me 5 minutes to decide which I want to do: presumably if I left it, it would restart once the progress bar reached zero. Despite me pressing Restart later, the Window has popped up 3 times already. When I click Restart Later, I mean "later, when I've decided I want to restart"?! Not "I can't decide, ask me again in 5 minutes"!

Do you people out there using Windows find this enjoyable? How on earth do you stop yourself putting your fist through the monitor with the constant nagging?

By the way sis, if you're reading this, thanks for the MP3s.
